Title One Cool Malt - Honey amber 1870's
Description This "Joh: Hoff - Berlin" malt extract is probaby German made, from the 1870's. I believe these applied blob top malts pre-date the olive green tapered tops, including the ones embossed on the front (not the shoulder). I have pictured it next to a LIEBIG in similar early form, dating probably to the late 1860's as the partial original label graphics seem to indicate. This HOFF bottle seems just a little later -- though it still features the deeply recessed post base. Dave Beeler just dug a LIEBIG in this same darker amber color in an 1870's pit, which tends to confirm my dating. There are no chips or cracks after cleaning it inside and out, but some ground wear remains, two very small base nicks and some inside stain, mostly in the neck and shoulders. I hear there are pontiled Hoff's, but this is the earliest I've seen. Probably a tough bottle to find in any condition. Rich amber, with enough honey tone to contrast with most straight amber shades. Price includes shipping and handling.
